Nairobi, Kisumu among areas to experience heavy downpours

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning of expected heavy rains in several regions between Friday, March 21, and Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

The advisory states that parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern lowlands, and North-Eastern Kenya should prepare for intense rainfall.

According to Kenya Met, counties in the Highlands East, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, will experience heavy rainfall, mostly in the afternoons, accompanied by thunderstorms.

Similar weather conditions are expected in the Lake Basin and Rift Valley regions, such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo-Marakwet.

Other areas set to receive substantial rainfall include Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

Meanwhile, moderate rainfall will be recorded in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and some parts of Tana River.

Residents in coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as eastern counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, should expect light showers during this period.

In addition to the rainfall warning, the meteorological department has cautioned residents in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi to prepare for extremely cold nights.

Temperatures in these areas are expected to drop to 8°C on the first two days and later rise to 9°C.

On the other hand, high daytime temperatures will be felt in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and Nandi.

Similar conditions are forecast in Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, where residents have been advised to prepare for extreme heat.
